Catholicism. People are fascinated by this side of
his life. Did you see the Roman Catholic part of
McLuhan in his daily work?
A: In many ways McLuhan could be called an
orthodox Roman Catholic in that he did parade his
brood to mass religiously on Sunday
systematically, and often we would take a break
when I was working with him and he’d go to mass
in the middle of a weekday. So by the form of it,
you could say that he was a systematic and
devoted Roman Catholic. But he was far beyond
that in certain ways, because he was such a
scholar. He would seem to be translating one
